Fencing to Keep Deer Away

We've heard a lot of people say "If you can see deer in your backyard, you are at risk for Lyme". The deer play an important part in the life cycle of the deer tick.  If it's possible, you might want to fence your property. Deer can easily jump a 6 foot fence. However, they tend to take the easy path and will avoid jumping in most cases. An added bonus of keeping the deer off your property is that they won't be able to ravage your plants and bushes.

Another advantage of fencing is that it will tend to keep the chickens and guinea fowl on your property. The downside is that the birds, especially when young, are not smart enough to find their way back if they do end up on the other side. Make sure to put enough gates in the fence so that you can leave them open if the birds are on the wrong side of the fence.

Check with your local zoning board before installing any fencing. If you have the funds and a certain amount of creativity, a well designed fence can add value to your property. If you decide to go with fencing, consider an electrically operated gate. These are usually subject to strict codes but they do make life a lot easier for you.
