The Medical Community and Government regarding Lyme
There is a great deal of controversy regarding Lyme disease in the Medical community. On one hand, there are people who believe that that Lyme disease requires the use of long-term antibiotic therapy. On the other hand, there are those who believe the treatment with antibiotics for Lyme should be limited to 30 days at most.
Many people who suffer from the disease and related diseases, believe that it cannot be treated with short term in antibiotic treatments. Their experience has been that the disease is chronic and long-term treatment is required for any type of relief.
Recent guidelines published in the Journal of Clinical Infectious Diseases ells Physicians and that they should only treat Lyme with a 30 day course of antibiotics. They also advise against nutritional supplements and vitamins as a means of combating the disease. One group that will benefit from these guidelines is the multibillion dollar insurance industry. The guidelines as published are being used by the insurance companies to deny payment for long-term treatment of Lyme disease. The recent midterm elections (2006) have set the stage for a presidential run by Hillary Rodham Clinton. She has promised to revisit the health care plan that she floated as first lady. The problem that many people see with the previous plan was it would prevent people from seeking private health care outside the system. Currently if you're suffering from tick related diseases, and you don't believe you're getting the care you should be getting, you can seek alternatives. However the health care plan that was floated by the current new York senator would have criminalized "out of system" health care.
If this is coupled with ill conceived "guidelines" such as the ones mentioned in the paragraph above, this could spell disaster for the hundreds of thousands of people suffering from this devasting disease.
